270 Robson Street, Vancouver (Downtown) I have never really had ramen before, so I was excited when Eivan had suggested that we go for ramen. Apparently ramen is even more enjoyable when it's super cold outside, so going on one of the colder nights was definitely a good choice (I think..) Jinya Ramen Bar has many locations all over the United States from the West Coast to the Midwest, as well as two Vancouver locations. We hit up the location on Robson and Hamilton Downtown. Not really know what to order and what to expect (as I had only been to ramen one other time before), Eivan suggested that I try their Jinya Tonkatsu Black, which has a lot of ingredients - too many to name - but overall incredibly yummy. Perfect for a cold and dreary Vancouver night! The thing with ramen places is that they are small and incredibly popular. That combination in itself means that there are usually long line ups, whether it is dinner time or not. If you want to give Jinya Ramen bar a shot, or any other ramen place for that matter, then I hope you have a lot of patience!

2420 Main Street, Vancouver (Mount Pleasant)
The Wallflower is a modern, hipster diner with a predominantly vegan menu. Walking in on a cold, rainy evening, the atmosphere was cozy and rustic. The first thing that drew me into the restaurant was the black and white floral wall designs lit up with lights on one side. The other thing was the Etch & Sketch artwork hanging on the wall behind the bar, which was up for sale. Personally I am not a vegan, so I decided to take full advantage of this new experience by trying the Vegan Mac and Cheesy with side salad. It was delicious and just as creamy as typical mac and cheese, despite the fact that it is not made with any cream, milk or cheese. It was definitely a different experience that I will try again in the future. Vegan food has become more accessible lately, so I guess it's time to take advantage of that fact! If you aren't a vegan, never fear: their menu is also loaded with omnivorous options that are just as delicious. They also have a weekend brunch menu that is something that I would like to try in the future. One tip for this restaurant is to make a reservation online instead of going right at dinner time or for brunch. When I went around 5:30, we were seated right away because of the fact that we made reservations. But we saw many people being turned away because there was no room in the very intimate dining area. Give their website a look around, check out their food and reserve yourself a spot! 85 West 1st Avenue, Vancouver (False Creek/Olympic Village) People that know me well know that I don't really like the taste of beer. So why oh why would I go to a place called Craft Beer Market, which boasts 100+ different kinds of beer on tap in their restaurant? In this foodie adventure with fellow peer leaders and friends Kim and Shelby, our girls night out took us to Olympic Village where we enjoyed the various kinds of beer on tap and their delicious comfort food classic, macaroni and cheese. The restaurant is in the old Salt Building, and it is massive. The atmosphere is so lively and the huge bar that runs along the center of the floor houses all the various taps for beer, anything from pale ale to lager to malts and stouts (and yes, I had to Google all that). My friend Kim is a bit of a beer connoisseur, and she was the one that told us about this lovely place and also had a coupon for a free appy - fish tacos! And as mentioned above, we had their craft mac & cheese, complete with breadcrumbs, a blend of three cheeses, bacon and poblano peppers which added an extra kick. But the beer was obviously the star of the show. Upon asking our waitress what she would recommend to someone who has zero knowledge of beer, she brought over three different kinds of beer - Fruli, Stiegl Radler, and some pale ale or another. I ended up going with the Stiegl Radler, which had the taste of grapefruit, sparkling, and did not taste like regular beer at all. This is how I ease my way into beer... I see myself going back again and again in the future, definitely! |
