On a beautiful summery day, I spent the day with Eleanor in White Rock. Our first stop was brunch at The Wooden Spoon Co.! This super tiny and modern looking restaurant is best-known for their brunch, but are also open for lunch and dinner. You can make reservations ahead of time, and that is usually recommended because they get super busy super quick! The menu had a lot of yummy looking food choices, making it super difficult to choose just one thing to have! But since Eleanor had been to The Wooden Spoon before, upon her recommendation we both had eggs bennys! I ended up having the SoCal, which had spiced chicken, avocado, and sweet corn relish under two poached eggs, and Eleanor had The Wooden, which had maple bacon and carmelized onions under two poached eggs. Both of these were also served with potato fritters, which were a refreshing take on the usual potato hashbrowns, and a quinoa salad. This cute little restaurant with quick access to White Rock beach is the perfect start to any beach day, and I hope to go back really soon!

Places dedicated to breakfast/brunch are super awesome. Even better are places dedicated to one particular brunch item, which in Yolks' case is eggs benedict (henceforth referred to as an eggs benny). Truth be told, I was never really a fan of eggs growing up. My appreciation for them only started with scrambled eggs when I was about 11 or 12. Any other method of cooking eggs - hard/soft boiled, poached, sunny side up - was not for me. I still have this resistance to this day, though I am slowly becoming more appreciative of eggs beyond their scrambled and omelette form. Since I was coming to a place that is known throughoutthe city for their eggs bennys (and people wait in lines for them!), then I knew that it would be foolish to get anything else. I went with my friend Jamie to celebrate the end of final exams, and we went to the more conveniently located West Broadway location (their commissary is on East Hastings at Commercial, a particularly run down and more difficult part of town to get to, though it can be done!). At Yolks, you are able to build your eggs benny, so I went with the classic English muffin with maple ham, the poached egg (of course) and topped with aged white cheddar, as well as added a side of the famous lemon truffle hashbrowns. Everything was incredible and tasty, and it helped my appreciation for poached eggs more and more! Yolks does not take reservations, and because of its popularity you might find yourself waiting for a bit. But I promise, it's worth it! Also, check out how ya girl was featured on Yolks' Instagram! 8410 160th Street. Surrey (Fleetwood)
A cozy community spot in the middle of Fleetwood, Edith & Arthur is part of the successful Joseph Richard Group of public houses and pubs in the Langley and Surrey area. I had been to Edith & Arthur a few times, mostly for brunch. One of the best kept secrets in the Fleetwood area is the fact that the brunch is super cheap; in fact, the menu runs through all of the establishments in the JR Group, so you can go to any one of their locations to have a super delicious and affordable brunch! Breakfast/brunch is my favourite meal, and this is a great place to go and enjoy great company and some delicious food! All of the breakfast items are $6, with the exception of The Classic Breakfast which is $4. The first time I went to Edith & Arthur, I had the delicious Southwestern Skillet, which was the perfect amount of food and I loved the hashbrowns that were in it. I also had a wonderful brunch with my friends and had a Meat Lover's omelette, and that was just as good! The cool thing about Edith & Arthur also is that they have a few games for patrons to play, like Jenga, Apples to Apples and Scrabble. Their regular food is pretty decent, though a little pricey for small portions. Given that Edith & Arthur is so close, I see myself frequenting this place in the future, most likely for brunch! 1305 Commercial Drive, Vancouver (The Drive) I've always loved board games growing up as a kid, and when I found out that board game restaurants were actually a thing in the city, I knew that I had to check it out! On this holiday, Victoria day Monday, my friends and I checked out Storm Crow Tavern on Commercial Drive., which is dubbed by the restaurant as "Vancouver's original nerd bar". And they are indeed right - the vintage-y wooden furniture is decked out with Star Trek posters, Minecraft swords, comic book clippings, and a huge shelf that was filled with various board and card games. To combat the not so sunny weather, we deicded to check it out and play a classic, Monopoly. We got there right when it opened, so we were able to get seats right away. I heard that it usually gets quite packed in the evenings, so this was super nice to get a seat without having to wait! Due to the fact that it was a holiday, they were serving their weekend brunch. We each ordered Eggs Benny, which you could build yourself. The Benny came with the English muffin and the poached egg x 2, and you could two items such as cheese, bacon, sausage, avocado.. the list goes on. This dish comes with some fruit and super yummy hashbrowns. Everything was delicious! To add the already competitive nature of our Monopoly game, we ordered mimosas, which were also quite nice. Great atmosphere, friendly service, and definitely something unique in the city where you can have fun the old school way! However, one thing I did notice is that the brunch menu that they have on their website versus what I had in front of me in persion is completely different - online, they advertise that they have things like "Fantasy Frittata" or "Stuffed Banana Bread French Toast", neither of which I saw on the menu today. I'm not sure if the regular lunch/dinner menu is like that too, so I would defiitely suggest not getting too attached to a dish when you are checking out the place online, just in case the menu is completely different! Other than that, the place is an absolute gem and a whole lot of fun. 556 Beatty Street, Vancouver | 542 Herald Street, Victoria This Victoria all day breakfast place made its trek across the Straight of Georgia to Beatty Street by Stadium Chinatown station, and it was quite the feat. My friend Kim took me to Jam Cafe, which hails from Victoria. Upon entry into the restaurant, we had thankfully beat the brunch rush and didn't have to wait at all to get a comfy table. Everything on the menu looked delicious, and the items were quite interesting, which included red velvet pancakes, brioche French toast and their biscuit bowls. We were warned by our server that the portions were huge - and they weren't wrong. We decided to get the little versions of the bowls - the Little Charlie and the Little Veggie - and found out that that it was virtually impossible for anyone to finish even the little version. That boggled me, but at the end of our meal, I found that our server was right. The Little Veggie consisted of biscuits, hashbrowns, peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, green onions, cheddar and mushrooms, topped with two sunny-side up eggs. It was delicious but incredibly overwhelming. As the waiter predicted, I couldn't finish my bowl, and I felt super bad about it. Looking around at other dishes, I could see that other dishes such as their chicken and waffles or their blueberry pancakes were massive, and unless you hadn't eaten for days, you wouldn't be able to finish it at all. I watched two girls both order the blueberry pancakes, and neither of them made a dent in the pancakes. In fact, even if they shared the pancakes, they probably wouldn't be able to finish them. The food is absolutely delicious, but my suggestion is to go with some super hungry friends and share the dishes. The amount of wastage makes my heart sink, but nevertheless go check them out, and bring your appetite! They have all day breakfast and lunch options for those that may not be feeling breakfast. |
