I finally made it to Fondway after hearing so many incredible things about it! What I noticed first once I walked in was how extra the place was - usually if a place is too extra then I tend to feel overwhelmed and not like the place, but for whatever reason, it worked really well for them. I also noticed that Metrotown has a number of cafes that serve up fine pastries and sweets that are Europoean inspired but with an Asian twist, similar to nearby Cafe Joie or Moment Dessert House. The decor really puts it over the top with the mason jar lights, massive clock face tables and very Alice in Wonderland-esque wall decorations. I went with Mateo to catch up, and we both went all out with what we tried, because when you're at Fondway, why not? We quickly found that even the way they present the food is extra. I had a caramel macchiato and Mateo had a latte, and we split a red bean-matcha cheesecake and matcha cookies. The cheesecake was super fluffy, despite the fact that it wasn't a Japanese cheesecake, but tasty nonetheless. The cookies were okay - not as much matcha taste as I would have liked, but then again, the colour should have been a tip off! The drinks were really nice, and true to Fondway nature, the coffee art was extra too. Fondway is a really popular place for people to come and study or hang out, and it is conveniently located right across from the Metrotown skytrain station!

Sitting right next to Ki Tea House, Camellia Tea & Coffee is characterized by their cheerful red umbrellas outside their restaurant that can be spotted from the Skytrain. Offering a wide selection of teas, coffees and pastries, Camellia was another coffee shop that I wanted to give a try. Acting as the neighbourhood Starbucks, the quality of products that Camellia had to offer was spectacular, and it made Camellia a cozy spot to hang out. For the first time, I tried affogato, which was really good! The overall ambiance was very home-y, with cute vintage furniture and a variety of treats. Definitely a place to go back to! |
